Natalie D-Napoleon

When Australian singer-songwriter Natalie D-Napoleon played the celebrated Sings Like Hell concert series in California’s historic Lobero Theater last December she joined an alumni that includes musical icons such as Jackson Browne, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Damien Rice and Patty Griffin.

The performance was the culmination of dynamic period in the singer-songwriter’s career. After receiving a grant from the Australian government to record in the United States, Natalie wrangled a cast of esteemed musical personalities to help her produce her debut solo album - Leaving Me Dry.

Her regular sidekicks Dan Phillips and Kenny Edwards have worked with everyone from Peter Gabriel to Linda Ronstadt, David Piltch, who oversaw the album’s production and played bass, had last produced kd lang’s "Watershed” while drummer Aaron Sterling and pedal steel player Greg Leisz are regulars with the likes of John Mayer, Taylor Swift and Jackson Browne. Folk icon Victoria Williams also helped out with banjo and vocals on the album.

"Recording that album with those people was a dream come true,” Natalie said. "The Lobero show at Sings Like Hell gave me a chance to put those songs and that era of my songwriting to bed. It was a highlight to be able to play at a series that has presented so many seminal artists - like my favorites Gillian Welch and Damien Rice. Right after the show a new bunch of tunes started pouring out of me!”

Raised on a combination of Croatian folk songs and classic American standards while growing up on a farm just outside of Perth in Western Australia, music was always destined to play a significant role in Natalie’s life. While driving produce to market with her father, she would harmonize with the radio on songs like Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou" and Linda Ronstadt's "It's So Easy." Little did she realize that a few years later she would be harmonizing with some of those voices.

Natalie’s emergence upon the Australian music scene came through fronting the alternative pop band Bloom, which in 1997 won the Western Australian Music Industry Award for Most Promising New Act. Natalie went on to form the Perth-based alternative country ensemble Flavor of the Month, a forerunner in the emergence of Americana music in Australia.

After relocating to California, the first thing Natalie did was gather a collective of local musical contemporaries to record an album. Recorded in Santa Barbara, Leaving Me Dry was released in 2012 by the eclectic Santa Barbara-based label, Household Ink Records.

The next phase of her recorded journey will include an album of acoustic covers that will be followed by an album of brand new original material. But first Natalie will bring her heartfelt and passionate take on Americana music to Germany for an intimate acoustic performance at Hamburg’s Pooca Bar on Monday March 27 …
